Implantology

Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing or failing teeth.
Dental implants are artificial tooth-roots that provide a permanent base for placing a fixed tooth replacement (Dental implant crown or bridge). They have become very popular because they fit, feel and function like natural teeth.
You can use dental implants to replace one missing tooth, several missing teeth or all missing teeth. Our implant specialists are very experienced on placing implants and restoring them.

One missing tooth?

If you have a missing tooth, a dental implant is the best solution. Regardless of the missing tooth is visible or not, it should be replaced in order to prevent possible dental health problems in the future. The single dental implant acts as a support for the placement of a crown, which will perfectly replace the natural tooth. The crown that is fixed over the implant matches the color and contour of the natural teeth so that no difference is visible. Another option for replacing a single missing tooth is a dental bridge. However, in most cases we do not advise this because the outer layer of the adjacent teeth needs to be drilled-out to support the bridge structure. A single implant will not affect its neighboring teeth and is therefore, in most cases, our treatment of choice.

Several missing teeth?

When several teeth are missing, multiple individual implants or an implant supported bridge are possible solutions. Another common treatment for replacing several missing teeth is a removable partial prosthesis. However, in most cases we do not advise this due to multiple disadvantages such as:

  • Patients not getting accustomed to the prosthesis.
  • It may lead to problems in the gums.
  • It may cause trauma in the supporting teeth due to pressure caused by their anchoring hooks.
  • It must be removed every night.
  • It may affect speech and taste.
  • They might not be stable enough and move during speaking/eating.

Meerdere implantaten of een door een implantaat ondersteunde brug zijn permanente en vaste (niet uitneembare) oplossingen en zijn daarom onze voorkeursbehandelingen, omdat ze niet de bovengenoemde nadelen hebben.

All missing teeth?

If all teeth are missing in the upper arch, lower arch or both, a full arch fixed prosthesis supported over 4 or 6 implants is the best solution. A common option for replacing all missing teeth is the use of dentures. However some people may not get used to their dentures and experience discomfort/pain, lack of stability of the denture, problems during speaking/eating and psychological stress. If this is the case, a fixed implant supported prosthesis will improve self-esteem due to increased functionality, aesthetics and comfort. With this solution patients are able to eat, talk and smile with confidence once again. Besides fixed implant supported prosthesis, another option is an implant retained over-denture. Although it is not a fixed solution it can greatly improve the stability of a denture.
